The ranking below uses the median rather than the mean, because a handful of very high earners drags a mean upward and makes a job look better paid than it typically is. ### How the ranking is built Every figure comes from one federal release, so the jobs are genuinely comparable with each other. The table is generated from the same data as the individual occupation pages, which means the ranking here and the number on any given page can never disagree. One caveat worth having before you read it. Median pay says nothing about how long the training takes, what it costs, or how many jobs exist. Several of the occupations at the top of this list require a decade of training and admit a few thousand people a year. ### What a pay ranking leaves out A list ordered by salary answers one question and quietly implies answers to several others it has no information about. Employment size is the most important of these: an occupation can pay extremely well and employ only a few thousand people nationally, which makes it a poor target for someone choosing a direction. Read any high salary alongside these, all of which appear on the individual occupation pages. - Total US employment, which tells you whether the job actually exists in numbers - The 10th percentile, which is closer to what you earn starting out than the median is - The gap between median and mean, which shows how lopsided the pay distribution is - State figures, because the national median can be far from what your state pays ### Common questions **What is the highest paying job in the US?** By median annual salary in the May 2025 federal wage data, the highest-paid occupations are medical specialties, led by surgical and anaesthesia subspecialties. Physicians occupy most of the top twenty, and the first occupation outside medicine appears lower than most people expect. **Do these salaries include bonuses?** They include base pay, cost-of-living allowances, incentive pay such as commissions and production bonuses, and on-call pay. They exclude employer contributions to benefits, back pay, tuition reimbursement and severance. Non-production bonuses are excluded, which matters most in fields where annual bonuses are a large share of total compensation. **Why is the median used instead of the average?** Because pay distributions are skewed. In most occupations the mean sits above the median, because a small group of very high earners pulls it up while nobody can earn less than nothing at the other end. This page explains how to read the state figures on this site, and where they mislead. ### Which states appear for an occupation State pages on this site exist only where a state genuinely employs the occupation in reportable numbers. That is a deliberate choice rather than a limitation. Crossing every occupation with every state would produce around 40,000 pages, most of them describing a job that a handful of people in that state hold, at a figure the survey is too thin to support. So a missing state means one of two things: the Bureau of Labor Statistics suppressed the estimate because the sample was too small to publish reliably, or the employment is below the threshold this site uses. Neither means nobody does that job there. ### The comparison this data cannot make None of these figures are adjusted for cost of living, and this site does not adjust them. That is worth stating plainly because the unadjusted comparison is the one people make by default, and it is frequently backwards. A state paying 20 percent above the national median with housing costs 45 percent above it leaves you worse off, and the wage data alone will never show that. The honest use of a state comparison is narrow: it tells you what employers in that state pay, which is what you need when negotiating an offer you already have. It does not tell you where to move. ### Common questions **Which state has the highest salaries?** It depends entirely on the occupation, which is why this site reports pay per state per job rather than publishing a single state ranking. States with high overall averages tend to be those with a concentration of high-paying industries, not states that pay more for the same work. **Why does the same job pay so differently between states?** Three things drive most of the gap: local cost of living, how concentrated employers are in that state, and in licensed occupations how many qualified people are available. Multiply an hourly rate by 2,080 and you have the annual equivalent before tax. The table below does that for every common rate, and also shows a 1,950-hour year, which is what the same job comes to with two weeks of unpaid leave. ### How to convert an hourly rate 1. Multiply by hours per week: Take the hourly rate and multiply it by the hours you actually work in a week. Forty is the convention, but use your real number, because the whole conversion is only as accurate as this figure. 2. Multiply by paid weeks: Multiply the weekly figure by the number of weeks you are paid for. Fifty-two if your leave is paid, fewer if it is not. Fifty-two weeks at forty hours is where the standard 2,080-hour year comes from. 3. Check it against the occupation: Compare the result with the published median for the job on this site. If the two are far apart, the difference is usually unpaid overtime, part-time hours, or a regional pay gap rather than an error in the arithmetic. One caution that matters more than it sounds. This site never converts between hourly and annual on its occupation pages, and neither should you when reading them. The figure assumes paid leave and paid public holidays, so it describes the hours you are paid for rather than the hours you are at work. Where leave is unpaid the effective year is nearer 1,950 hours. **Does this include overtime?** No. The conversion assumes every hour is paid at the same rate. This page is what the survey does and does not tell you. ### What the survey measures The Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics programme surveys employers, not workers, twice a year, and pools three years of responses to produce estimates for about 830 detailed occupations. Because it asks establishments rather than individuals, it captures what employers pay rather than what people report earning, which is the main reason its figures sit below the numbers on salary-sharing sites. Wages counted in these figures: - Base rate of pay - Cost-of-living allowances - Guaranteed pay and hazard pay - Incentive pay including commissions and production bonuses - Tips, and on-call pay Excluded, and their absence changes the picture in some fields: - Employer contributions to benefits, insurance and retirement - Non-production bonuses, which in finance and sales can exceed base pay - Overtime premium pay - Back pay, jury duty pay, severance and tuition reimbursement - The self-employed, who are not surveyed at all ### What the percentiles mean A percentile is a position in the pay range, not a career stage. The 25th percentile is the salary below which a quarter of people in that occupation are paid; it is not the same as "what you earn after two years", though the two often look similar. Someone experienced in a low-paying region can sit at the 25th percentile for a whole career. The median and the mean answer different questions and the gap between them is informative on its own. Where the mean sits well above the median, the occupation has a long upper tail: a minority earn far more than the typical worker. It is the best single answer to what a job typically pays, because unlike the mean it is not moved by a small number of very high earners. **Mean wage**: The arithmetic average of all wages in the occupation. It sits above the median in most occupations, because pay distributions have a long upper tail and no matching lower one. **Percentile**: A position in the pay range. The 25th percentile is the wage below which a quarter of workers in that occupation are paid. It is a position, not a career stage, though the two often look alike. **OEWS**: The Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics programme, a twice-yearly US federal survey of employers that produces wage and employment estimates for around 830 occupations. It was known as OES until 2021. **SOC code**: The Standard Occupational Classification code, a six-digit federal identifier for an occupation, written as two digits, a hyphen and four more. Registered Nurses are 29-1141. It is what makes two data sources about the same job genuinely comparable. **Suppressed estimate**: A figure the survey declines to publish because the sample behind it was too small to be reliable. Every occupation page on this site is a detailed occupation, so no figure here is an average of averages. ### Four ways these numbers get misread - Treating the median as a starting salary. It is the midpoint of everyone doing the job, including people thirty years in. The 10th percentile is the closer figure for someone entering the field. - Comparing states without adjusting for cost of living. This site publishes neither an adjustment nor a ranking of states overall, because the unadjusted comparison is misleading often enough to be worth refusing. - Reading a suppressed estimate as a zero. Where a page says "Not published", the survey withheld that figure because its sample was too thin to stand behind. It does not mean the job pays nothing, and it does not mean nobody does it. - Assuming an annual figure is the hourly rate times 2,080. It is not, and this site never computes one from the other. The survey publishes both separately, and in occupations with substantial part-time or seasonal work they do not reconcile. ### Common questions **How current is this data?** The May 2025 release, which is the most recent available. The survey pools three years of employer responses and wages are adjusted to the reference period, so the figures describe the year rather than a single month. A new release lands roughly annually and this site is regenerated from it. **Why are these salaries lower than what I see elsewhere?** Salary-sharing sites collect self-reported figures from people who choose to submit them, which skews toward higher earners in larger companies and metro areas.
